From Personal Challenge to Community Impact: How One Mom's Journey Inspired a Business

Starting a business often comes from a place of passion, personal experience, and the desire to make a difference. For Kirsten Legner, the founder of Swedish Girl Bakery, her entrepreneurial journey was deeply personal and rooted in the love for her son.

A Personal Journey

Kirsten's son was diagnosed with celiac disease at a young age. This diagnosis meant a complete overhaul of their family’s diet and lifestyle. Kirsten quickly realized that many children with food allergies, like her son, often missed out on the simple joys of childhood—one of the most notable being real birthday cakes. Seeing the disappointment in her son's eyes when he couldn’t enjoy a birthday cake like other kids was heart-wrenching.

"I couldn't find something good in stores, so I started experimenting myself," says Kirsten.  Her first kitchen test was chocolate chip cookies.  "I gave them to my friends, and they couldn't even tell the cookies were gluten-free," she adds.  "My friends are the ones that initially suggested I should sell them."

And those cookies sold really well!  "It reached a point where my husband told me that we either needed to go big and move out of my house or we needed to shut it down," she says.  "So I went big!"

Building a Business with Heart

From the beginning, Kirsten’s business has been about more than just cakes; it’s been about community and inclusion. She understands the challenges parents face when dealing with food allergies and has made it her mission to provide not just products, but peace of mind.

"Today we have 12 employees that really care about what we do," Kirsten says.  "We specialize in creating beautiful, safe, and tasty treats for children with a variety of dietary restrictions.  Don't get me wrong ... adults love them too!"

The Role of Fodeez® Reusable Adhesive Frames

In running her business, Kirsten found innovative ways to keep her workspace organized and her business operations smooth. One of her favorite tools has been Fodeez® Reusable Adhesive Frames. These versatile frames have been a game-changer for her in several ways:

  1. Store-front Communication: Kirsten uses Fodeez® Frames to display customer notices and promotions.  "These make it so easy and clean to communicate with customers and to display our health certifications," she says.

  2. Order Management: Keeping track of orders is crucial in a bakery, especially when dealing with custom allergy-friendly requests. Kirsten uses Fodeez® Frames on her office walls to create an organized and dynamic order board. This system helps her visualize her workflow and ensures that every customer’s needs are met with precision.

  3. Inspiration and Motivation: Running a business can be challenging, and staying motivated is key. Kirsten uses Fodeez® Frames to display customer testimonials, thank-you notes, and pictures of happy children enjoying her cakes. These reminders of why she started her business keep her inspired and driven every day.
