Why nails aren't always an option
Landlords charge for holes. Dorms ban them. Plaster cracks. Some walls are brick, tile, or concrete. And even homeowners get tired of the spackle-sand-paint routine every time a photo moves.
The bigger problem is that most "no nail" solutions were designed for smooth, flat drywall. If your walls have orange peel, knockdown, or popcorn texture, which is most apartments built in the last 30 years, the majority of these products will let go within days.
Your damage-free options, ranked honestly
1. Adhesive hanging strips (Command strips and similar)
How it works: Foam strips with a stretch-release tab. Press one side to the frame, one to the wall.
Where it shines: Smooth, painted drywall, with a real (rigid) picture frame, hung once and left alone.
Where it fails: Textured walls. The foam only contacts the high points of the texture, so the bond is a fraction of what's advertised. They're also single-use. Once you pull the tab, that strip is done, and moving a frame means buying more. On fresh paint, they can still peel the finish when removed.
2. Poster putty / mounting tack
How it works: Pliable adhesive dough pressed behind the corners.
Where it shines: Lightweight paper, posters, temporary displays.
Where it fails: Anything with weight, anywhere warm. Putty softens and slides in summer, leaves oily spots on paint, and won't hold a real frame. On textured walls it grips texture, not paper, and lets go.
3. Tape (painter's tape, washi tape, double-sided)
How it works: Self-explanatory.
Where it shines: Quick, cheap, fine for a week.
Where it fails: It looks temporary because it is. Double-sided tape pulls paint on removal; painter's tape and washi don't hold on texture at all. And every swap means a fresh piece of tape and, usually, a slightly torn photo.

How to hang a picture gallery without nails, step by step
- Plan on the floor first. Lay your frames out on the floor in the arrangement you want. Take a photo of it with your phone.
- Wipe the wall. A dry microfiber cloth is enough. Dust is the number one reason any adhesive fails.
